Abstract

Appendix tumors in patients undergoing appendectomy for appendicitis: A retrospective study

Introduction: Primary cancers of the appendix are very rare and most of them are usually found accidentally on appendectomies performed for appendicitis. Although these tumors are rare, there is a diverse histology.

Methods:  We conducted a single-centre retrospective study of patients undergoing appendectomy at our institution for the suspended diagnosis of appendicitis. From January 2003 to December 2018 a total of 1809 patients underwent appendectomy under general anesthesia. Patient demographics, type of procedure and tumor histology were recorded.
